Guests of Honor

Bob Carlin

Bob Carlin

Bob Carlin will be Guest of Honor for the 25th annual Florida Old Time Music Championship, March 31 and April 1, 2006. Probably the best known clawhammer style banjoist performing today, we can't think of anyone who has done more for old time banjo and old time music than Carlin, who has been providing workshops, lectures, and performances for over thirty years.

Bob was an integral part of John Hartford's string band and produced their recordings for six years, touring with them throughout the U.S., Canada, and Japan.

As a member of the John Hartford String Band and as a solo performer Bob has appeared at museums, music camps and festivals including, American Fiddle Tunes in Port Townsend, WA, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, and Merle Fest.

National radio appearances include, A Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage, and the Grand Old Opry.

He has studied, in person and via recorded transcriptions, the work of master old time musicians from previous generations, resulting in over fifty albums primarily for Rounder Records and the Library of Congress, and many magazine or journal articles, CD notes and two Grammy-nominated recordings.

Bob has been an active contributing editor to The Old Time Herald since 1995, and in 2004, his book, String Bands in the North Carolina Piedmont (McFarland & Company) was published with universally positive reviews.

Among recordings produced by Bob are: Joe Thompson (Family Tradition, Rounder Records) the last North Carolina African-American string band fiddler, The Reeltime Travelers (Livin' Reeltime, Thinkin' Old Time, Yodel-Ay-Hee Records), Gail Gillespie (Travelin' Shoes, Buck Snort Records), Cary Fridley (Neighbor Girl, Juba Records), and acclaimed archival projects like the Rounder North Carolina Banjo Collection, and the landmark, Altamont: Black String Band Music From The Library of Congress, also on Rounder Records.
